Alborz Red Mouflon
Alborz Red Mouflon
A distinctive wild sheep of northern Iran, adapted to the rugged landscapes and high-altitude environments of the Alborz Mountains.
Physical Characteristics
The Alborz red mouflon is a distinctive wild sheep found in the mountainous regions of northern Iran. Its body length is approximately 150 cm, with a tail length of around 20 cm, a shoulder height of 75 to 100 cm, and a body weight ranging from 25 to 80 kg.
This form is considered to have characteristics resulting from the interaction and hybridization of urial and Armenian wild sheep populations. In the eastern part of its range, particularly from the west and south of Shahrood toward Firuzkooh, its characteristics more closely resemble those of the urial ram.
The hair beneath the neck is relatively long and has a peppered coloration, while the chest is generally black and may occasionally display a combination of black and white. The horns curve downward toward the lower part of the neck, resembling the characteristic horn shape of the urial.
Well adapted to mountainous environments, the Alborz red mouflon can occupy elevations of up to approximately 4,000 meters.
Like other wild sheep of the region, the Alborz red mouflon exhibits seasonal altitudinal migration. During spring and summer, it occupies higher mountain areas, while in colder months it moves toward lower elevations where conditions are more favorable.
Biology & Behavior
The Alborz red mouflon is primarily diurnal, although it may occasionally become active at night. As a herbivorous ruminant, it has well-developed senses of sight and smell that help it detect food and potential threats in its mountainous environment.
These animals are generally social and live in groups. Adult males typically form separate groups from females and their young, particularly outside the breeding season.
The breeding season takes place during autumn. Females generally give birth to two lambs, with births occurring in spring.
Many aspects of the Alborz red mouflon's biology and behavior are similar to those of the urial wild sheep, reflecting their close relationship and shared adaptation to mountainous habitats.
Habitat & Distribution
The Alborz red mouflon inhabits mountainous terrain, rolling hills, semi-arid slopes, and high-altitude pastures.
Its distribution extends across the central and eastern Alborz Mountains, with its western range reaching approximately toward the Sefidrud River near Manjil.
The species occurs across several provinces of northern and central Iran, including Tehran, Mazandaran, Qazvin, Semnan, and parts of Qom Province.
Its ability to move between different elevations allows it to exploit high-altitude pastures during the warmer months while moving to lower elevations during winter.
Conservation Status
The Alborz red mouflon is categorized as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List.
